Hi, in researching this topic, I haven't found any good guidelines for my question, "If I purchase an out of state new vehicle such as a Scout, will that dealer be able to register and pass onward the state taxes via reciprocity (or otherwise) to the state and register there as well?"

Say, for states that have archaic dealership rules preventing direct purchasing, will this be an obvious work around? A deal killer for me is paying sales taxes twice and wanted to hear of real-world experiences along these lines. Thanks for reading.

My experience has been that sales tax is collected by the state DMV where the vehicle will reside at the time of vehicle registration. Dealers may collect the sales tax and forward (often done between adjoining states) or the dealer may issue a temp plate (keep copy of sales doc’s with car). Purchaser then has to complete the vehicle title application themselves and submit to their DMV. “Likely” not DMV’s role to enforce dealer franchise law. Others may have actual experience dealing with this issue?

When I was going to purchase a car in Oregon but live down here in Arizona, I was going to get the temporary tag from the dealer but then I would have to register it here and pay the tax when I registered it. I think it really depends on how common it is for out-of-state folks to buy from that particular dealer. Not a lot of Oregon to Arizona purchases but Wyoming to Utah, for example, makes sense. Or Arizona to California.

I’ve done this multiple times, buy a vehicle in Utah living in Wyoming. The dealership has always done all paperwork and pay sales tax in my state, generally give a 60 day temp tag to cover the processing time.
Living in Washington and buying in Oregon, that has been my experience as well.

Yeah it’s usually neighboring states, they don’t want to take the time to investigate all the ins and outs if it’s not fairly common.

Bought an RV in AZ and registered in Calif, had a 30 day temp tag from dealer, no AZ tax as long as it leaves the state.

You all have it easy NJ, its a week if you move to the state and for temp tag its 30 days after you enter the state. And you have to pay for the tag and the registration fees.

So im guessing that if I pick up at factory, once i enter NJ i will be on the 7 hour long DMV line. Since either would count as if i was moving from another state to NJ.

Unless Scout is printing temp tag specific to the state the vehicle is going to.

At least here in Calif I can make an online reservation for a DMV apt within 30 min time give or take another 30, better than the same 7 hour walk up line.

PS, I used to live in Trenton, a good place... to be from!

You pay the sales tax of the state the vehicle will be registered in. Every time. That's the law. No exceptions.

State laws for out of state purchases probably vary. I have only done a vehicle once, and it was a neighboring state. Honestly, it was so insignificant that I don't recall the details. I suspect I told the dealer, and either they handled the paperwork, or I went to my county tax office and dealt with it myself (given I don't remember, they probably handled it).

Now I did do an out of state boat purchase a couple months ago. It was less friendly. Florida and Texas don't have any agreements. Florida really want's their tax revenues, Texas kind of also does. Seller had to submit documentation to Florida that the boat was going to be removed from Florida in 5 days, then had to submit proof within 10 days that it was removed from Florida, plus proof that it was registered in Texas and the taxes were paid in Texas. I have my Texas title now - I hope the seller submitted their 1/2 of the paperwork. That said, they know their books are reviewed and the last thing they want to be liable for is the sales tax on their end.

Anyway, paying the tax is not hard - but making sure you don't owe it twice on boats requires some paperwork. My case was worse than some because I purchased from the builder not a dealer. More paperwork. But as a custom builder, they did not have a dealer network. I made it worse because I did not use a common carrier for delivery. Postage on a boat adds up quick - estimate was about $5k.
