does anyone have experience with the Dongar usb adapter to split power from the mirror?

in my other car, i already have an escort 360c along with escort's M2 camera which daisy chains the RJ11 jack to provide power for both the cam and detector. this is installed in my using a mirror tap and blendmount. convenient and streamlined setup. but i'm thinking of getting a different camera, as the escort M2 IQ and interface isn't exactly great. was thinking of a dedicated dash cam and also utilizing features like park-mode.

i assume the Dongar USB splitter only provides power when the car is on or in accessory mode? would it possible to use both the MIrror Tap (to power the radar detector) and the Dongar harness (to power a camera) simultaneously?

I'll answer my own question....

I skipped the Dongar adapter since I'm using an Escort M2 dashcam that can daisy chain the RJ11 power connector from the mirrortaps to power both the cam and radar detector. I also installed the Civic Homelink mirror and jumped the yellow and red cables as well as tapping the black and red. I felt that there was just too much cabling with the Dongar setup.

Well I was hoping there were more commentators on this thread lol I received a Garmin mini 2 dash cam for Christmas & already have a Uniden R8 still in the box with 2 different style mirror taps. I learned that I needed the Dongar adapter for plug & play & today Iā€™ve been trying to search info on if I can wire the mirror tap to the adapter somehow & still hide it all behind the trim. The Dongar & Garmin do have parking mode though.

Youā€™re right about it looking like thereā€™s a good amount a cabling, at least what I could tell from their install video.

I hope the OP & no one else minds that I latch on to this thread instead of making a new one (maybe causing clutter), since itā€™s essentially the same thing that I will be attempting but I havenā€™t found anything on here & the civic forums on this exact setup.

It seems the FitcamX with blendmount setup is the most popular & actually what I was going to go with, but I received a Garmin Mini 2 dash cam for Christmas from my wife which sounds like another solid choice with parking mode & other features I need to get more acquainted with. Not as clean of a setup, but close - & in the future I may use one of them for the rear when I continue to add cameras.

After looking at different threads, videos, & chatting with some others on here I think what I can do is hookup the dash cam using the Dongar adapter & THEN, my plan is to use one of the mirror taps I have (1 Blendmount, 1 StickerFab) to tap into the BACK of the Dongar adapter. In theory, this should all work & make for a streamlined, clean looking install - correct? I am NOT an electrical guy. I can do nuts & bolts all day & so far have done all the work myself on this thing, but I donā€™t really wanna eff this up or have it take any longer than it needs to since I have a handful of other items to install when I can carve some time in for them.

Is there any reason why we couldnā€™t mirror tap into the rear of the Dongar adapter - or in the case of the fitcam, tap into the rear of the fitcam adapter that it comes with??

Thanks in advance for any light you might be able to shed on this for me! This is actually my first dash cam & detector setup.

For convenience, I saved a few screenshots from the fitcam/Blendmount thread as well as a few other places, but @Fawkes provided some excellent pics of the wiring up close to make this easier & StickerFab confirmed itā€™s pretty much red to red & black to black when using the mirror tap. Iā€™m not sure if the plug he tapped into is the fitcam adapter or the rear of the oem harness plug, but again Iā€™m thinking I can hookup mine up very similar to this. Right? šŸ˜„

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here, but just wondering if you ever got this figured out? I'm taking delivery of a type S soon and radar & dashcam are two things I want to install asap. Was thinking about doing exactly this, but wasn't sure if it would work.

Sorry for the late reply - having to deal with some stuff. But yes, this ended up working and I made an overview video about it awhile back in case that helps:

Just Seeing this. Thanks for the Info. I got a FitcamX and mirror Tap as this seemed like the cleanest easiest install. Hoping to put them both in in the next few days now that I finally have the car.
Thanks again!

Since you have a Uniden R8 in a Blendmount... Does your radar detector vibrate and rattle while on the mount, especially between 2 and 4k RPM (and even worse on rough roads)?

I'm trying to figure out what I can do to quiet it down.

Sorry for the crappy quality photo but the Dongar adapter knock on wood works pretty well to power my dashcam. I installed it and decided to run the USB port to the outside so that I can easily swap in the future. You can do this by flexing the ventilation grill that you pop off, then feeding the red/back wire through the top slat before plugging that in to the main adapter.

The only downside is that in doing so something got even more susceptible to vibrations in the area. Weird part is it's not really noticeable to the ear but since the cam is right next to it, I get horrible buzz in my recordings as I accelerate through a certain RPM range. I plan on popping it open again during this year's hibernation period and maybe adding some felt pads in there, who knows the vibration might have already been there from the factory.

Long story short I'd still buy it again in a heartbeat over a hardwire kit that you need to route all the way to the fusebox.

I have the same set-up, although I jammed the USB part into the covered area around the mirror, so radar detector and dashcam all wired through Mirror power. I barely got the plastic bits all back together because of that damn USB port thingy. But at least it's all quiet.

Actually no, just sometimes upon startup with the AC on but I also have suspension mods.
I did place the sticky felt at the close contact point points which helps & I've had to tighten the Allen key once bc it was a little loose and loud.
