Specifically chasing NA and induction noise. I have a fun turbo car already :)

If I can't make the 718/981 6 cyl w. the GT4-esque intake work, I'll settle for an E9x M3 w. bearings, etc. or an AP1 S2K. It's probably going to be the S2k, and I'm okay with that, but dream big, as they say.
I hear you, I just try to advocate for the 4 cylinder 718 whenever I can. It's probably the best "bang for the buck" in this current market as far as what you get from a sports car at its price point- but it does not have the same sound, which I totally understand is a critical component to the sports car experience.

I wanna say that 981 base or even S cars and S2Ks are going to be about the same price soon, if not already. That is a tough call because they each have their own appeals... I'd lean towards Porsche though for modernity and proven reliability. Probably significantly more performant too at least stock for stock.

Weirdly I saw a video of an EK9 Type R the other day that made me want one very fiercely.

Yeah, the turbo Caymans are an under appreciated value proposition (or trending towards one, at least).

981 base would be similar (assuming MT). The S2k market is declining. It is nearly double (not quite) for a mint 981S vs AP1 now.

This is kind of where I am coming from. (Keeping in mind this is a second car that will likely be slower and less capable than my primary one, regardless of what direction I go in...) The AP1 is taken to the nth degree in a way many cars aren't, and I kind of want that experience on hand. (P Cars taken to the nth degree will likely never fall within my budget.)

While the 981 is a far superior and more capable platform, it isn't quite as high strung. That said, I've always been in love w. the 718 GT4 intake / engine combination, and I've been waiting for someone to introduce an aftermarket solution. A base 981 works for that (and is certainly already an awesome car).

It's really too bad the Goldleaf intake isn't compatible w. 987.2s... 😭

I had an AP1 S2k for a dozen years, great car. A friend recently bought one and I drove it, still great.

I replaced it with a 981S Boxster, which I still drive. It is awesome, with two exceptions. The gearing sucks for everyday driving (too long for the street, but great for the track), and I hate the parking brake. Also, steering is better on the 987/986, IMO.

The 4-cylinder 718s are very fast. But they sound like Subarus and the throttle response is not ideal. Steering is better than the 981, though.

Your thoughts are identical to mine. I was turned off by the gearing on the 981S (I just wanted to wind it out and let it sing, but I felt like I couldn't drive it the way I wanted to, at least not responsibly) and unimpressed by the steering. The lower output of the base 981 might resolve the gearing issues -- can't say, as I haven't driven one.

The 718 4.0 is obviously in another class, but so is the price. It will be interesting to see how they depreciate with the next generation being electric... my guess is they will continue to hold their value even as the P Car and sports car bubbles subside.

If you run the 981S out in second gear, you're doing 80-something. Not that many places I want to do that (aside from the track) (but I do). It's annoying. But otherwise it's awesome, super fun and easy to drive. I may lose it if my partner decides to make it her track car (she currently runs a 986). If she does I'll have to figure it out, but a 718 4.0 or a 991.2 vert would be on the list. Or maybe I'll just take her 986.
