In the US at least with the Ram truck brand, we receive VIN's before they're built & can track them on the line.

Same with Ford and GM.

I wonder if it's all across the board in the US or something different. I want to say that my last salesman said something about legality with needing a VIN to take a deposit down on my truck build. Said they could do it another way like a few dealers, but would get in trouble with the manufacturer & potentially fraud. I'll ask him when I see him again here in town. I want to try the new Hurricane engines when they're available to test drive.
