MSRP Type S vs Marked up Type R?

Anyone else interested in the Type R but getting frustrated with markups? Seems like it is a lot more plausible to get the Type S at MSRP.

Average Type R markup seems to be 8-10k around me, which means an MSRP Type S is actually cheaper.

All the reviews seem to be great, I had low expectations, but am impressed enough to now seriously consider the Type S.

I will get whichever is cheaper. S is the better looking of the two, with a better exhaust and more comfy DD. R has the better interior, cleaner widebody, and the "rarity factor" if you care about that. That rarity plus the big wing are negatives to me because it will bring the wrong kind of attention and make me paranoid.

Sorry for you, having to wait. I DID NOT pre-order one. I test drove at my local Acura dealership on Monday, July 3rd. It is a "Launch" edition with the dealer added accessories, many of which I wanted; the MSRP plus the added options from the dealer came to a total of $58,904. Here is the thing; I have the bronze wheels on the car but also have the black wheels in boxes that I will put all-season tires on for October - March. The summer tires will go back on for the warmer months.

I like the other items added to the car, but there was ZERO market adjustment. I called 9 different Acura dealers and my best deal was locally. With their added options they were asking $60,119, and I talked them down to $58,904. I put $25,000 down and financed $37,827. I declined the extended warranty and wanted nothing else from the dealership finance guy. Rates aren't great right now but I'll knock the rest out after a few investments settle.

I can't give my location right now, but down the road a bit in Louisville (KY) they had an identical "Launch Edition" but it was marked up to $78,000. Hard pass.

Here was my deal, purchased on July 7th.

MSRP - $52,595

Total Added Options:
  1. Bronze Wheels - $2434 (Dealer) / $2186 (listed price on Acura.com)
  2. Carbon Fiber Door Mirror Covers - $662 / $600
  3. Type S Door Sill Illuminated Trim - $1002.50 / $460
  4. Front illuminated A-mark emblem - $598 / $350
  5. Gloss Black Rear A-mark emblem - $142 / $80
  6. Gloss Black Type S emblems - $364 / $240
  7. Premium Type S Floor Mats - $215 / $240
  8. Type S Shift Knob (I had this removed as it was scratched and had the original put back on
  9. Alcantara Steering Wheel - $508 / 400 (I have the leather wheel to use later once the Alcantara dies)
  10. Carbon Fiber Tailgate Spoiler - $1213 / $950
  11. Type S Valve Stem Covers - $44 / $29
  12. Black Wheel Locks - $124 / $93
I ordered the back seat protectors and trunk tray as I will use the space in the back quite a bit. I also ordered the Splash Guards to keep crap from flinging up the sides of the car; I have another white car (1995 300ZX Twin Turbo) and the splash guard actually help.
I currently have 325 miles on the odometer. Next steps:
Monday - Windows tinted
Tuesday - Ceramic coating (will take a few days to get the car back due to curing and buffing, but the paint will look like wet glass when its finished).

Overall I love the car. Good luck to those who are seriously looking for one. Happy hunting.

Wow, they must be putting those same options on a lot of cars. I swear, I test drove a twin of the car you're describing down in Atlanta. Same exact options--floormats, Alcantara steering wheel, valve stem covers, blacked out badges, everything!

There is a list of accessories that Acura corporate required all dealerships to add in exchange for getting a demo unit (essentially one extra ITS allocation). It included the bronze wheels, black badging, illuminated door sills, illuminated front emblem, carbon fiber mirror caps and spoiler, all-season mats, alcantera wheel, and titanium shift knob. There's possibly more items, but these are the ones that stand out.

For smaller dealerships only expecting 1-3 regular allocations for the year, one extra allocation is huge.

I think we're in another "dark age" as far as information on this car is concerned.

The pre-delivery fiasco threw a lot of metrics off. It seems that most dealers honored an MSRP offering for those who chose to enter the pre-order sweepstakes and actually secure a car, so that makes up most of the data that has been trickling through unofficial channels like the poll on this very forum. Looks like the vast majority are paying MSRP as of right now, at least those who choose to share some details of their transactions.

The problem right now is that for those who just couldn't deal with the color combinations that were on offer and/or didn't want to play that game of watching the inevitable and continuous technical issues that people dealt with, those people are finding it very difficult to secure cars or allocations. There is pent up demand for this car, especially at this stage of the release cycle. All of the preorder cars have yet to be delivered, so anything else is either a demo or some mysterious allocation that dealers may have not even expected. I've been in pretty consistent contact with three local dealers, and the best I could get is estimates for some cars arriving the end of this month at $3-5k over MSRP, or the one dealer I found locally giving me at MSRP but giving me an estimate of 2-3 months before delivery. All of this is subject to change of course, at the whims of cars that show up early/unexpectedly or buyers backing out of orders.

Also I should point out that I could have had one of the white/red dealer demos at MSRP plus a list of accessories that totaled ~$62k, but that wasn't a compromise I was willing to make. I don't want red interior, and I don't want the bronze wheels at $2400 (although really it isn't bad if you do get to keep the grey wheels...), and many of the other accessories like a $700 ceramic coating.

My observation is that people who don't have cars right now are struggling to get them, which is not a good recipe for avoiding markups. There is currently a lot of inventory on Civic Type R's right now (see https://www.motoringobsession.com/stock/civic-type-r), yet markups are staying consistently at an average of over $14k.

Saying it isn't too hard to find an ITS at MSRP doesn't really pass the vibe check. Maybe after more cars arrive at dealerships (supposedly end of the month?) we can start to get a better understanding.

My thinking was the same and so I bought a Type S. Might actually be easier to get too, maybe.

I have a deposit on a demo as well. White/Red. What color is your dealer getting? The car will be MSRP, but accessories will hit you for $5,822.88, which is not even including installation. Use the dealer net as a negotiation tool. Sell either the shark gray or bronze wheels, and that helps offset the cost even more. Armed with this info, I’m hoping the my dealer shows a bit of flexibility. Speaking with the sales manager it seems he will be willing to work out a deal.

BTW.. If you live in a front plate state (like I do), make sure you tell the dealership to not install the front plate frame when they PDI it and install the accessories.

I was able to get the launch version with all the accessories shown above in white with red interior. The dealer charged me 3648 for all the accessories. No mark up and no installation charge.
Good deals are few and far between, assuming you actually wanted all of those accessories, I'd say that's a good deal.

seems like the only options are to wait to later this year or 2024 to get a decent shot at allocation at MSRP or open wallets and pay the premium.

So with all this extra inventory I noticed for Type Rs, I decided to do a bit of exploration. As it turns out, markups do appear to be dropping.

They're still absolutely there, and I think it helps that I have an interesting trade-in. But... I could get a Civic now, and it would still come in cheaper than the Type S (significantly cheaper considering add-ons).

Starting to think about it...

For me I do prefer the Type S but only just barely. The fit and finish issues aren't a deal-breaker for me but they do seem to be better overall on the Type R. I definitely prefer the seats in the R, but not a huge fan of the red interior. I do like the "heritage" or whatnot of the Type R badge, but also realize it's pretty much a novelty because really the only "track focus" comes down to software. I'd have to upgrade the exhaust immediately but that's not prohibitive; ~$700 for an exhaust on a Civic is trivial compared to the $6000 Kline setup I wanted for the 718 (and that's the stainless version, the inconel is even more insane).

But... I could get a Civic now lol.

Tomorrow might be an interesting day.

Agreed. The only thing I don’t like about the CTR is the red interior. That’s a compromise I can accept, considering everything else.
