I have been having this issue the past month that seemingly random my apple car play would just stop working. Sometimes it would just say could not connect to device in smartphone connection when I startup car and it would not work for that drive. And sometimes when it did work at startup it would just seem to stop responding randomly when I was driving. Even though CarPlay would not work didn't have any problems with just the Bluetooth connection. Well about a month ago I changed my service provider to spectrum mobile.
Today, I pulled into the Starbucks drive through and the CarPlay went out. Since I was sitting in the drive through I picked up my phone and noticed I was on Wi-Fi NOT 5G. I checked and I was connected to one of spectrum mobile hotspots. I changed it to "do not automatically connect" and almost instantly when I was back on 5g the carplay started working again...
Seems Spectrum mobile uses IMEID numbers for secure access to their hotspots and has client isolation enabled on their hotspots they have scattered everywhere. This would not allow my phone to also be connected to carplay VIA Wifi while connected to spectrums hotspots. So if I was near a hotspot when I started the car it would not connect and if I was driving around town and it connected to hotspot it would seem to stop responding.
I looked up the spectrum mobile hotspot map around my area and was quite surprised how many are around me.
I guess Spectrum enables this automatically to save 5G bandwidth so most of its customers are unaware their devices are constantly flipping between 5g and Wifi as it was set as preferred wifi on by device automatically by service provider provisioning.
Anyway, hope this helps if anyone is having similar problems with their Android or iPhone check if you are connected to one of your service providers hotspots.

Fucking carriers and their skimping on services you supposedly pay for.

Another oddball glitch at least with AA is that it won't do shit if your phone is on a VPN of any sort. I run a wireguard server so I can get to my home network at times and don't always disconnect it before getting into the car. At least it warns you of that, but only on the phone, and only after you stab at the screen for a good while wondering if it's the car that's screwed up (again.)

I recently purchased FITCAMX dash cams for both my 2023 MDX and my 2024 ITS and connecting to the dash cam to download video does not play well with CarPlay. Basically I cannot connect to the dashcam while in my car due to being connected to CarPlay. That is fine because it is so slow anyway, I just pull the MicroSD card and read it on an iPad anyway.

I had the same problem with Android Auto. The solution I found was to download videos while the car is OFF. If you sit in the car without turning it on, power is still sent to FITCAMX. Because the car is not ON, phone will not connect to head unit. Hence, WiFi is available to connect to FITCAMX.

Yes, that makes sense. But I have found it is so much faster to just pull the MicroSD and read it off my iPad that I only use app to make changes in the settings of the dashcam.
