I have been having this issue the past month that seemingly random my apple car play would just stop working. Sometimes it would just say could not connect to device in smartphone connection when I startup car and it would not work for that drive. And sometimes when it did work at startup it would just seem to stop responding randomly when I was driving. Even though CarPlay would not work didn't have any problems with just the Bluetooth connection. Well about a month ago I changed my service provider to spectrum mobile.
Today, I pulled into the Starbucks drive through and the CarPlay went out. Since I was sitting in the drive through I picked up my phone and noticed I was on Wi-Fi NOT 5G. I checked and I was connected to one of spectrum mobile hotspots. I changed it to "do not automatically connect" and almost instantly when I was back on 5g the carplay started working again...
Seems Spectrum mobile uses IMEID numbers for secure access to their hotspots and has client isolation enabled on their hotspots they have scattered everywhere. This would not allow my phone to also be connected to carplay VIA Wifi while connected to spectrums hotspots. So if I was near a hotspot when I started the car it would not connect and if I was driving around town and it connected to hotspot it would seem to stop responding.
I looked up the spectrum mobile hotspot map around my area and was quite surprised how many are around me.
I guess Spectrum enables this automatically to save 5G bandwidth so most of its customers are unaware their devices are constantly flipping between 5g and Wifi as it was set as preferred wifi on by device automatically by service provider provisioning.
Anyway, hope this helps if anyone is having similar problems with their Android or iPhone check if you are connected to one of your service providers hotspots.
