brake hold and hill hold are the same thing. Its my fault for commenting that first gear will not hold the car on a hill that started this mess.
But, you don't need to engage brake hold to use the hill hold feature. It's always there.

Brake hold and hill hold are similar features, but not the same.

Brake hold is activated via button and can be used at any time. The hold is also indefinite, until the driver actively puts the car into motion, disables it, or opens the door (in which case the parking brake will engage).

Hill hold is a system that engages whenever the car detects you are in gear and on a hill. The car holds the brake to provide time for the driver to come off the brake and onto throttle. This is generally more useful on a manual transmission, as it reduces the amount the car will roll.

In the Integra, hill assist cannot be turned off. Also, most systems like this will only hold for a few seconds.. After which the car will start rolling.

True. Seems you also need to be in first gear for it to work (or at least in gear...if not, car will roll backward).

Correct, hill hold (or hill assist in some cars) is specifically to help the driver get the car moving while on an incline. The idea is that it takes a second to come off the brake, on to the gas, and off the clutch.

Think of it like Clippy from Office... "hey, it looks like you're trying to start on a hill! Let me help you with that!"

Brake hold can actually be used in the same scenario but it isn't exclusive to a hill start. I see it as an expanded feature to reduce driver fatigue in situations where you'd normally be on the brake for extended periods of time, but may be called to move on a moment's notice (a drive through comes to mind).

My wife and I have an ongoing joke where we call this the "lazy button." Haha. I agree with some other posts that it can encourage some bad habits. Personally, driving is an experience for me and I want to be as connected to the process as I can be. I see the benefits on hills and such. However, I also know some folks who keep this engaged all the time to take their foot off the brake at red lights.
