I slept on a decent deal in my home state of WA and now I regret it.

How complex is it buying a new car at an out of state dealership? Does the dealer title the car in resident state or their state and then one has to basically register it twice? Once purchased, is it feasible to have the car shipped? Or can you drive it back home?

Anybody have experience with this type of purchase?

It's no big deal at all. At least not in MO.

I bought my Subie from a dealer in Kansas, who shipped it to me on a transporter. The taxes and registration were not a problem.

Edit: Also, the Kansas dealer put temp tags on it, so I was able to drive it right away.

Good Luck

Also, if anybody knows a a decent dealer that will sell at MSRP, let me know. The average markup I have been seeing is 5k. I am willing to wait out the FOMO in order not to get ripped off. Thanks.

Got mine from Nalley Acura here in Atlanta for MSRP. I was on the list once the car was unveiled. Give them a call. Martin Rand was my sales rep.

I’ve bought two cars recently from out of state (Alabama). It’s slightly more of a headache but not really a big deal.

True: You pay taxes on where the car will be titled and registered not where you bought it from.

In my experience the paperwork takes longer. Took almost 2 months to get my title paperwork for tag on vehicle I bought for older son. Picked up a CPO ASpec Integra before Christmas and no title paperwork yet.

I would love to have the car, but I am getting a bit burned out on dealer shenanigans. With the MSRP markups and dealer add-ons, the car is priced similer to a BMW m340i or Mercedes C43. Doesn't make sense then.

Nevertheless, I will keep searching for a MSRP dealer somewhat close to Washington state. Thanks

Be sure to tell them you're from out of state to weed out any bad deals. For cars with high demand and lower supply, some dealers will only at MSRP sell locally. The idea is that local buyers will come back for service where out of state buyers would not. Might take a bit of calling around but you'll find one eventually. Also since you're looking out of state, make sure you can get your numbers in writing so you don't waste your time flying out there.

I bought mine in a contiguous state.
The dealer did everything with my state DMV.
They gave me a temp tag from the state where I bought the dealer.
My state DMV mailed the tag to the dealer and the dealer sent it to me the next day.
Taxes are based on the state you are registering the vehicle.

The process was smooth.
Took about a month.
The dealer did all the heavy lifting.

I bought my 2024 Integra Tech for 2k less than MSRP and no add-ons. What car are you trying to buy?

I just purchased my ITS from a Florida dealership and had it shipped to my state.

In general, no issues buying out of state, but in the case of Florida if you live in Arkansas, Mississippi, or West Virginia, these states do not give credit for sales tax paid in Florida. In other words, in almost every case you must pay Florida sales tax and get a credit for tax paid in your state.

As I live in one of the states above, If I had gone to Florida to buy the car, I would have to have paid Florida and Arkansas sales tax.

I talked to the dealership about this. They told me if the car is shipped out of Florida, (not driven in Florida after the sale) No Florida sales tax collected. That’s the way they structured the deal.

All the other cars I purchased out of state, they just put me in the car, and I paid tax in my state.

The dealership where you purchase the vehicle will register and title it at your home state and you will pay taxes at your home state. I live in MD, purchased in VA and drove it home with (dealer provided) temporary tags. I got my MD tags, registration and title in the mail all within 2 weeks.
