Wow..you guys are all going wider for winter tires.

I was thinking of going 235/35R19 because they are fairly affordable.

I know that is just barely going to cover a 19x9.5" wheel.

Do you think it is a mistake to go that narrow?

Patrick
I went with 235/40-18. Would have liked to even go 225... Of course this is not on the OE wheels (but on 18x8 wheels).

If you get lot of snow like us in Canada, narrower tire is really better in the snow than a wider tire.

If you look online for a 9.5" wide wheel the normal acceptable tire size is between 255-275.

What I have found for a 235/35 tire is acceptable rim range is 7.5-9.5"

I've ordered a set 285/30/19 tire for the stock rim. I'm going to sell the stock tires 265/30/19. Whoever is interested in buying them, I'm located in NY. I rather prefer a local pick-up. Contact me if interested. The car has 307 miles as of this moment. The tires I ordered will be coming in 9/12.

Hmm i get that going narrower tires for winter is ideal for cutting. However, tires too narrow for wide wheels will likely yield a rough ride comfort because the sidewalls will not have sufficient curvature to make them flex over potholes, speedbumps or roads that aren’t smooth. There’s risk of smacking rims into potholes as there isn’t enough flex. At high speeds your tires may just rip away from the wheels.

The other side of the equation. wheels that are too narrow in relation to the tire width may cause the tires to distort excessively sideways under fast cornering. There is risk of pinching the tire inwards and bulging in the cross-section.

Both setups would affect lateral stability and sidewall integrity, there’s a sidewall height and tire width aspect ratio for every tire that should be maintained. Best case there would be uneven tire wear between center and edges. Worst case sidewalls would fail, tires explode or just rip off the rim rings.

Tires are very important for safety, performance/looks is secondary. Try not to deviate too much from manufacturers recommendations.

Stay safe. Tires are worth the cost in winter conditions or any condition in general

I did 255/35-19 on the stock rim and those barely cover the rim. I don't think 235 is going to work, you need to go down to an 8.5" wheel.

I just ordered Michelin Pilot A/S3+ from Costco. It is a bit of an older design, but got 275/30/19 for $290 a tire. I wanted that size since my speedo will only be off 1% and I wanted to stay in the Michelin family with Costco's warranty.
