It's been a frustrating first year of ownership for me. I consider myself to be a patient, relatively laid-back person, but I'm genuinely vexed at this point. I took delivery last November and got to drive my shiny new car, the first one in 10 years, for about a month before I put it away for the winter. I took it out of storage in April. In May, I went for an evening drive and a deer RAN in front of me. It emerged from the tree line when I was cruising at 45 mph on a winding back road, and I only had a moment to react. I managed to hit the brakes, but it was too late to avoid contact. The car struck the deer square in its side and sent it flying. Fast forward a couple of months...The vehicle repairs were complete except for the air box. I picked up the car in early August, so I missed most of the summer, but that's not the reason for my frustration. Since then, the car has been in and out of the body shop and the dealer (for a different reason) several times.

When I picked up the car in August, I knew I had to bring it back because the cracked air box still needed replacement (there were no new air boxes in the country and none expected until late August). In addition to the air box, there was overspray on the passenger side rear door and questionable panel gaps between the hood and adjacent panels (but I'll get to that later). I was told to bring the car back after they received the air box and they would take care of it and the overspray. I felt comfortable with the plan and understood these were simple problems. On my way home from work that day I noticed the steering wheel was about 15° CCW off TDC when driving straight, so I called and let them know I wanted the alignment done again, no big deal.

A couple of days later I was washing the car in my driveway when I noticed a small bump on the hood and another glob that looked like a dried drip on the corner near the driver's side of the cowl. Not the end of the world, but frustrating. Also found a small puddle on the passenger side front sill because the winow seal was not seated properly....Minor issues, but more than I would have expected in total and my confidence began to wane at this point.

I showed the paint defects to the service advisor when I dropped it off the second time (for the air box and alignment). He reassured me the bump was just a "nib" and they could fix it this go around, but the drip was not an issue. I didn't like the dismissal of the glob as an issue, but it's not that big of a deal and I wasn't gonna die on that hill. We also talked about the panel gaps, but I'll get to that later. When I picked up the car he told me it wasn't a "nib" on the top of the hood, but something foreign in the paint and they would need the car a third time to repaint it...On they way home I noticed the steering wheel was now a few degrees CW of TDC, so I decided to take it to the dealer and pay for a proper alignment and severe gas pedal vibration. A couple of days later I noticed the horn was very faint.

I dropped the car off at the dealer in late September for the alignment, vibration issue, and to check the horn. They had it for a month, but they did fix the gas pedal vibration (some faulty bearing/drive assembly that bolts to the transmission was the culprit). They also informed me that the horn was cracked from the accident. I decided to drive the car for a week or so before taking it back to the body shop for the third visit.

I dropped the car off at the body shop about three weeks ago for the hood repair and horn replacement. I was told it would take a couple of days, but things did not go to plan, and they still have my car. The repairs were delayed because they ordered the wrong horn (apparently there are two, a low tone and a high tone) and two paint booths broke down. I got a call from the service advisor last Friday. He let me know that they dented the tailgate while it was in the shop and would repair it, but they need to keep it longer. Ugh. I understand things happen, but it has been one thing after another with these clowns. Shows what a certified Acura repair shop title is worth....

As for the panel gaps...my car had minor issues from the factory; however, the gaps after the repair are way bigger and less consistent. The front end looks like it was assembled by toddlers. It's a bit uneven. I asked the body shop if they could do anything to improve the gaps and get them closer to what they were from the factory. They told me there is absolutely nothing they can do. The insurance company is no help, they said it was a quality repair and they "fulfilled their legal obligation." Unsatisfied with these responses, I asked the body shop for the panel gap specs, which they provided. The nominal gap between the front fender and the hood should be 3.5mm according to the Acura document. I measured 5.6mm between the hood and the driver’s side front fender. No way the tolerance for a gap is +/- 60% of nominal. Acura refused to provide information beyond the nominal measurement. I went to the dealer and inspected the four Type-S cars they had on the lot at the time. None of them looked as bad as mine. Not much I can do at this point. The car runs and drives great. The problems are aesthetic, but I'm not happy with the car. I may trade it in and take the hit. Too much money to not love the car.

Sorry to hear about your issues, that's one of my biggest fears is that I'm involved in an accident with a new car. Takes away from some of the joy of ownership.

However, if the car runs well and it's just aesthetics, it may be worth looking past that and continue to enjoy the car. On the other hand, I feel it's fully justified to feel how you feel. It may be worth the trade up or trade in while the value is still good.

What would you move on to?

The factory paint and panel fit is already bad, so I can't even imagine post accident. I'm surprised insurance didn't total; that's what I would have fought for.

Can you take it to another independent body shop to have them check the work and then refile with insurance or get a lawyer on them?

Might be a lesson for the future, but it's rarely a good idea to accept insurance or dealer selected body shops. They always look at best return to them, not best quality of repair for you. Oh, and never accept a glass replacement that isn't oem, especially the crappy safelite stuff.

I got t-boned in my very new Volkswagen GTI gen 7 manual transmission years ago. Unfortunately the car did not have quite enough damage to be considered a total although it was very close. Of course the body shop and mechanic magicians did a pretty good job putting it back together again but it was never the same in my mind due to a couple of minor things. Even though I loved that car I just couldn't keep it anymore. I traded it in for a Hyundai Veloster N manual transmission and never looked back.

Thanks for all the replies....

Estimate for repairs was $12k, turned out to be $17k (not including the rework they've had to do due to their mistakes), so there was no way State Farm was going to total it.

I spent two weeks looking for a shop that came recommended by someone I trust. I narrowed it down to this place and another small local shop. My neighbor had his FK8 repaired at the place I took the ITS after a Deer ran into the door. His is as particular as I am, so I thought I was safe. And, I just had my wife's minivan fixed at the other shop after she side swiped someone in a parking lot. It came out okay, but you can definitely see waves in the front door. So, as frustrated as I am, I have no idea where else I would have taken it. If anyone knows a good shop in southern NH, let me know.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do. As crazy as it sounds, I'm inclined to get another white/red Type-S IF I decide to trade it in and I can find one and I don't take too much of a bath on the trade-in. I refuse to drive an automatic (at least for now) which greatly limits my choices. Before I bought this ITS, I considered the baby Blackwing, Camaro SS, Golf R, WRX, and Mustang GT. The ITS was the best fit for me: 4-doors, usable back seat, decent performance, manual transmission, sub $65k price. I would consider the Golf R, but my local dealer still wants $5k over MSRP which is a deal breaker for me. The Elantra N is cool (performance per dollar), but seems like a downgrade and it's not a looker IMHO. It's too bad the prices for used 911s is so bonkers. I wouldn't even mind a 996.

That's not crazy at all, in fact that's what I would have suggested lol. I know Sunnyside has some off the truck already and they sell at MSRP.

Sunnyside, that's where I purchased my current car (from Mike Keane). I noticed they have a white/red ITS in stock now. Hoping I can get mine back before they sell it.

Notice you have a R.I.P reference for an M2 Competition in your signature. What happened to it?

Body shops are getting tough. Fifteen years ago I had a handful I could trust in my area, now they're all getting rolled up (by Caliber, Classic, and the like) and turning into more earnings focused outfits (mostly owned by private equity). I still have a place that's great for Porsches (thankfully haven't needed it for a while) and another that's great for the other German cars, but they are spendy. When friends ask me about fixing Hondas and other normal cars, I shrug my shoulders, because normal body shops are all the same and they're all bad.

Mike Keane was also my sales rep at Sunnyside, I've genuinely had a positive experience with the sales and service team when I purchased mine back in April (was on the wait-list for the ITS in my spec since November of last year).

Which brings me to the M2C. Unfortunately, the same thing happened to me around this time last year; an errant deer decided to hop the guardrail as I was attempting to merge on the highway. I managed to avoid the damn thing but lost traction and spun out in the process. Totalled the car, unfortunately.

I agree with Tw1stedlog1k, if you can get into a new ITS with not to much damage to the wallet, I would absolutely do so if I were you. You’re always going to have little imperfections bother you throughout the life of the vehicle.

Before the ITS, I came from a manual GTI and the Golf R is the alternative I would choose from your short list.

Ouch. I did look at the M2 briefly, but Tulley BMW did not have any that were not spoken for and they wanted a lot more than sticker...cool car though. Any reason you didn't replace it with another M2?

If you can tolerate two seats, get a cayman or a supra.
I could get away with a two seater, but prefer a car with fours seats and doors :). I looked at the Cayman on Porsche's website, but it was not within my budget. My oldest will be off to college in two years, so I gotta resist the urge to spend more...I'm not a fan of the Supra's looks, although I can appreciate the performance. I saw a You Tube video where either Throttle house or Jason Cammisa (Haggerty) did a side by side with the Supra and the Z4, and preferred the tuning of the Supra (I guess it's really the same car).

I'm not a fan of the supra appearance either. The z4 is prettier.

Sadly there aren't many 4 door and a stick options. The its, m3, and ct4/5v-bw are pretty much the only "nicer options" and only 1 of them is a legit luxury car.

Have you driven the new z? It carries old DNA in the right places (brakes, diff, and trans for example) and newer stuff in others. A bit overpriced today, but dealers are feeling that scrunch and I've seen them drop msrp quite a bit. Hopefully they've dialed in the steering at this point having gone electric assist.
