Anyone else get a thud almost like a hard shift when shifting into reverse while rolling forward. I’m not talking about moving fast but unless I’m stopped when I put the gar into reverse it kind of thuds as if I slipped the clutch. Not a grinding but just like a thud. I have the clutch fully engaged the whole time though.

You should be coming to a complete stop before you shift into reverse, plain and simple.

Definitely come to a complete stop before you do that. I sometimes will be rolling backwards when I put it into 1st, but I don't think that's an issue.

^^This. It's not an automatic & doesn't behave the same way.

I was under the impression that so long as the clutch was fully engaged it didn’t matter what gear I was in as it’s essentially neutral? This is my first manual car. Is the thud having to do with the reverse lockout or am I forcing it into gear despite the clutch being engaged?

Like others said complete stop. I don't think the reverse gear has a synchronizer. I personally come to a complete stop then hold clutch in shift to 3rd then shift to reverse and let clutch out. I had some grinds/crunching on my 1.5T if this wasn't done. I still do this on my ITS.

Manual transmissions have physical locks in the shift mechanism to make selecting reverse an active exercise. Barring lockout rings or pushing down on the stick shift, deliberately trying to select reverse while driving forward at certain speeds is difficult with a manual. Plus I would say try to be deliberate in coming to a complete stop before you shift into reverse and then see if that thud is gone.

I was lazy one time and was rolling down my driveway and I put the tranny in reverse. The car did not like it.

Since we are talking about thuds, does anyone else get a thud if you shift hard into 2nd. Just got my car and went by my son's house to show him and let him take it for a spin. He shifted into 2nd and let the clutch out pretty quick and there was a pretty loud thud, and when he turns around to head back, he tried it again, same result. When I left his house, I tried it out and same result but also got a 2nd gear chirp.

Definitely do not try to shift into reverse without being at a complete stop. Most manual transmissions use an unsynchronized straight cut reverse gear. Without being at a complete stop, you are guaranteed to be causing some sort of damage.

You likely are hearing the clutch pedal hitting the stop under the dash. Throttlehouse complained about that in their initial review. Whenever I (rarely) slam gears I can hear the clutch pedal slam up against that stop and yes 2nd gear will give a chirp even with traction control on. 3rd will chirp on a slight incline like an on ramp and the kids will light up giggling every time they convince me to beat on the car..

IDK, it's a pretty loud thud, almost like a motor /transmission mount, but I'll look at it

Ooooh now im intrigued. Do you hear a clunk when reversing too? I can feel the whole engine slam through the mounts when backing into my driveway (slight incline).

No, haven't felt it in reverse, just if you let the clutch out fast. I haven't tried to hit 3rd hard yet either, but it might do it.

You may be feeling the motor mounts slamming. IMO they are way too soft in these cars. Reversing up my driveway is the most annoying feeling to me. I also can hear the movement if a car is beside mine as i hit the engagement point while doing so.
