Every time i turn my car on, i get, as I'm sure we all do, that data sharing notification.

Be that as it may, i went to go turn data sharing to off, and it said, nope, not without a valid signal or along those lines. TBH i can't exactly remember what it said when i went to turn it off.

Anyway what exactly is it sharing? I don't have AcuraCare turned on, i thought i was told at the dealership Acura it wasn't available for the Type S.

But i am curious as to what exactly its sharing.

I did notice that the TQI that the dealer is supposed follow at delivery, includes............... is that just what this disclaimer means? Your car is equipped with a little black box, that will snitch on you in the event of sending it into a tree !

21. Event Data Recorders
This vehicle is equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR)
The main purpose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations, such as an airbag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in understanding how a vehicle's systems performed. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as:
• How various systems in your vehicle were operating.
• Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fastened.
• How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal.
• How fast the vehicle was traveling.
Special equipment is required to read data recorded by an EDR, and access to the vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as law enforcement, that have the special equipment, can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.
The data belongs to the vehicle owner and may not be accessed by anyone else except as legally required or with the permission of the vehicle owner.

The EDR exists mostly for covering the manufacturer's butt in the event of a crash. Someone dies, their family sues the manufacturer, the manufacturer can look at that data and say, "yep, we screwed up, that airbag should've deployed" or, "nobody was wearing their seatbelts and they were traveling at 3x the speed limit."

It can also be used by the manufacturer to investigate crashes when they have a special interest. Maybe the first few crashes of a new model or in the event of an unusual crash. Reality is crash testing is an approximation of real-world events, and with the right sensors being tracked manufacturers get far more data from the real thing.

If the data sharing is limited to when you crash, fine, it's the continual data sharing I'm concerned about.

AFAIK, the Type S doesn't have that feature and unless you connect through the app, there's no way they can collect info on the regular. I don't need them knowing how often I travel to Mexico.

Kenn Dahl says he has always been a careful driver. The owner of a software company near Seattle, he drives a leased Chevrolet Bolt. He’s never been responsible for an accident.

So Mr. Dahl, 65, was surprised in 2022 when the cost of his car insurance jumped by 21 percent. Quotes from other insurance companies were also high. One insurance agent told him his LexisNexis report was a factor.

LexisNexis is a New York-based global data broker with a “Risk Solutions” division that caters to the auto insurance industry and has traditionally kept tabs on car accidents and tickets. Upon Mr. Dahl’s request, LexisNexis sent him a 258-page “consumer disclosure report,” which it must provide per the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

What it contained stunned him: more than 130 pages detailing each time he or his wife had driven the Bolt over the previous six months. It included the dates of 640 trips, their start and end times, the distance driven and an accounting of any speeding, hard braking or sharp accelerations. The only thing it didn’t have is where they had driven the car.

Oh wow... 258 pages on a Chevy bolt? I could only imagine if they collected data on my driving. I'm pretty sure it would exceed a pdfs capacity 🤣

To turn it off you got to
General Settings -> System -> Data Sharing

Must be connected to the internet to do that.

Did it on mine.
My rates will be affected by the way I drive this car. Reported Gs everywhere.

i just switched mine off. However now some of the acuralink linking info doesn't work. Not that i give a crap. I'm more concerned with the 3500 miles of giving it the beans (at times when safe to do so) as anymore would expect with a performance car. I mean i haven't been going nuts, but its not been driven like Mr Magoo.

Is there any way to stop and take away permission from Verisk to share this info. This could end up being a very big problem. Say every manufacturer starts employing this BS which more or less seems to be the case, then performance cars, and until owners are educated on how to turn off this big brother spyware, most if not all will just sign away or press OK on, then insurance rates will sky rocket for that particular model, and kill off the market, as no one will want to buy that model due to astronomical rates.

I hope i'm wrong about all of this, and that article was just being sensational.

Perhaps enthusiasts should start putting their energy into all of this, rather than spending all that effort arguing over silly oil analysis.
