So ive been noticing metal shavings appearing in the little recessed area where the latch of the hatch locks into the lower frame- sorry it's kinda hard to see in the pic i attached

my car was delivered to me with like 4 miles on it so i figured it was just leftover machining chips or whatever from the factory, but they keep repearing. every few days i notice another little pile there.

i was actually at my local acura dealership today (for something unrelated) and i brought it up, and i kinda got blown off with a generic "oh it's new, it'll stop after a bit" or whatever so i told them i'll keep an eye on it but i've never had a car do this before and i've had the car long enough now (just hit over 350 miles now) to where i'm wondering if this is indicative of some problem

has anyone else had this?

Better to have metal shavings there than your oil pan.

Most likely left over from drilling to install the spoiler. If I remember correctly you opted for the optional spoiler, correct? just a bunch of shavings laying around inside the trim of the hatch.

i did get opt for the carbon spoiler, though i assumed it used the same drill holes as the gloss one that comes from the factory.

that explanation does make sense though

Could be from a misaligned trunk and rubbing the bracket when closing. Clean it up and see if it continues.

My guess is shavings are from the latch mechanism tolerances being to tight.

I had the same issue because of the carbon fiber spoiler install. They have to drill several new holes in the installation. Video if you're curious.

I cleaned mine out every few days but they kept coming until I took it into the body shop for unrelated issues and they had to take the hatch apart and clean it out. I have to assume they'll eventually work themselves out on their own, or you could pull the trim and give it a good cleaning.

If you have the carbon spoiler then it’s probably just remnants they didn’t vacuum out. That’s exactly what mine were from.

For sure. I actually told them not to drill & just use the tape but they drilled anyway.
Wouldn't they have to Dremel or smooth down the bolts that go into the drilled holes? Seems like a better option. I know the one aftermarket look alike spoiler only requires tape.

nope, if you go watch an install of the carbon spoiler you do have to drill, so to me that makes sense, what doesn't is why did they leave any shavings behind?
I would like to see them use a magnet to clean up after but, meh... its not the end of the world.
