Can someone give me a heads up what to expect? And does the factory shift knob just unscrew?

If you have never removed the shift knob boot, that ring that holds it in place was a bitch to remove. I ended up destroying that ring. Good thing I didn't need it for my new replacement.

There's a couple good how-to's on YouTube. The main thing to remember when taking off the shift boot is to pull straight down on the ring/clamp and it will come off fairly easy. It tends to give a hard time and can break if you move it side to side while trying to pull it off (down).

Yeah that ring gave me all sorts of trouble. I tried being gentle every which way and finally gave up and pried it off with a couple butter knives. 2 hrs fiddling at that step.

After it was off, I can't imagine how anyone keeps theirs intact enough to snap back on and not rattle. Mine was super loose after.

It might actually have been easier to pry off the console cover and access the lower screw that way in my case.

Does the Acura accessory knob come with any instructions? One thing I have come to learn about Honda over the years is that they include instructions for even the simplest, dumbest procedures with their accessories. Even the mud flaps come with pages of instructions and that should be obvious as heck.

If there was a way to speed up the shift knob install and avoid damage, Honda would probably put out a procedure for dealer techs to follow. I'd be curious if they know a trick we don't. Everyone seems to fight with the boot clip ring and/or break it.

Removing the shifter surround trim is going to be your best bet. I tried the pull down method and it did not work for me. Since I was able to remove it properly I saved it in case I want to back to stock in the future. Look into the acuity collar. I did this so I can swap out to different knobs in the future more easily.

It’s a very easy process. When I installed my Mugen knob all I had to do was rotate the collar about 90 degrees and pull down. It came right down. Then I took the surround trim off, cut the zip tie, put a new acuity collar on, fresh zip tie, and installed the knob. Maybe 15 minutes.

Removing the shifter surround trim / center console cover was the easiest and safest way for me because I was concerned about ripping the shifter boot. I had planned to replace the original center console cover with the overland designs Alcantara one anyway, so the effort wasn’t wasted.

This YouTube video helped me quite a bit:
