It was fairly easy to remove the plastic by first starting cuts all around with a fresh blade and then crack pieces off with pliers. Too bad the underlying holes in the metal don't correspond with high/low marks but I marked them with a sharpie and then scored them with the blade. I also slightly rounded and dulled the metal tip to try to limit it scratching engine internals. It seems a little easier to read the oil level on fluid with about 2k miles of use.
