Gas Pump Cuts Super Early When Filling the Tank

Hey all,

I've driven ~11,500km so far and have been happy the entire time, except at the pumps (and not due to the cost, sadly). I swear, at 60-70% of stations the pump will cut fuel early under full squeeze (can get 4-10L before it constantly cuts under full squeeze). The only way to get a full tank is to watch the litre count and listen as it fills at a half hold. However, as I mentioned it isn't all stations I have yet to notice a pattern.

Wondering if anyone else here has experienced it. I'm planning on booking a recall soon and was wondering if I'm filling the car like a monkey somehow or if I should bring this up when I bring it in. I do hold the nozzle in for 5s after filling, but this has no impact and this has occurred the entire life of the car.

keep us posted. I always pump at half speed, and leave the nozzle in for 10 seconds after it stops. Hoping to avoid any issues. Curious what you find out.

This is the norm for me as well, using newer stations such as Wawa in NJ and PA (I am on the border), I can get another gallon+ typically. Given the small tank its easy to see when it only fills under 10gal vs 11 or so I expect when I run it down to 'empty' knowing it will go to 0 with 1-1.5g still left.

Just wanna make sure we’re talking the same page - I usually have it cut at 1 -> 4 gal total on a nearly empty tank, so several gallons of space left.

That is worse then what I see, but even 1-2g is way too much IMHO and not what I have dealt with in my other cars the past 35 years. Early on I filled a few times in NJ, drove away and noticed even the fuel gauge was not at 10/10 which was my first clue that perhaps its design and filler neck exasperated this behavior.

This has happened a couple of times. Both time were on the Mass Pike while traveling to/from Boston or Rhode Island. So far it hasn’t happened locally, so just monitoring it for now. If it starts happening more often then I’ll be giving the dealer a call.

I've only had 3 or 4 fill-ups so far, but I've had that issue every time with a full squeeze. Reducing flow seems to work for the most part.

:raises hand: Me too! I have this problem at nearly every pump (although I seem to have found a handful that don't do it as frequently if at all). The primary solution for me is to reduce flow to 2/3's instead of a full squeeze. It's doable, but irksome for sure. There are a handful of pumps that do this to me every time, while others at the same stations won't give me much trouble. I can only assume that pump pressure varies from pump to pump, which is not something I ever considered until this vehicle.

yep. Tight neck in the ITS I guess. FWIW, some Kia stingers had this same problem (my previous car) Filler neck designs must be changing for better evap/emmissions control or something.

My buddy just got an accord hybrid, and he was told to leave the pump handle in the filler neck, after it shuts off, for 5-10 seconds too.

you shouldn't fill up anymore after the cutoff kicks in. can damage the evap system and it's expensive to fix.

if i fill up at "range: 0 miles left" it will fill up 10 gallons. so i guess there's a 2 gallon reserve.

Yup, since the dawn of the idiot light MFGs figured out they need to have a hidden reserve because a person is smart, but people are stupid.

I do like the germans approach to telling you you have approximately X miles left but once you get to 10 it just goes to -- and you pucker up a bit . We all have rode the lightening a bit, but I don't make a habit of it :D

I usually fill at 1/2 or 3/4 speed, pumps here typically have the nozzle latch so I just lock it in. I use that time to clean the windows and wipers and keep a soft cloth handy to wipe the mirrors too. I do oil checks at home (when the car has been sitting for a while).

The car has a small tank and even at 1/2 speed fuelling it doesn't take too long.

Exactlly, set the auto latch at the lower of the two options and it's good to go.
