Trunk hatch doesn't open very quickly...

With the stronger struts, I feel like a small child could hang from the open hatch, and it wouldn’t close.
i think this would be perfect for me. Drop my sister off at high school everyday. She gets her backpack out and slams the hatch I die a little inside each time

Oh damn! I wouldn’t have thought the wing on the FL5 warranted so much ‘tension’/‘life power’. Thank you for sharing! I guess we should stick with the OEM struts unless someone feels like adding weight to the rear hatch via sound deadening or a DE4/DE5 wing when they become available

DE5 380newton struts. FL5 700N. I haven’t tried it but if it is too stiff, 500-550N could be the sweet spot

Kinda blew me away. Not a physics guy so couldn’t really picture the ‘power’ jump from 380 to 700. I think you’re right!

Interestingly enough, there are a number of CTR folks who have the same complaint that their hatch struts are too weak. I didn't imagine theirs would be that much heavier with the wing.

As a previous generation Integra owner, the first time I was in the car, and someone slammed the hatch on the Type S, I had a nostalgic moment of the same sound and pressure that only comes from a hatchback being dropped. I swear it was identical. Cherish that drop....

I just replaced the DE5 trunk struts with the FL5 ones and they are probably too strong. I'm a fairly big guy 6'2" 250 and I need two hands to pull it down and then have to push it closed. The good news is it opens on its own - and fast!
I might need to find an after market strut that is between these two (380 & 700)
The angle of the FL5 trunk must be very different because it can't be this heavy!!!

UPDATE: the sweet spot might be one of each! LOL

I just hate that it gets slammed by people that don't know not to slam it!
I find a lot of "slamming" is a result of not using it the way the silly engineers intended.

If you read the manual it states you should pull with the handle gently until the spoiler is in reach and then press down the rest of the way with the spoiler. I guess if you're tall enough to reach the spoiler you should never be using the handles. In any case, it doesn't slam this way. I only slam it when I'm lazy and don't want to close a hatch with two hands because the book told me to.

Yeah you're totally right! I don't disagree at all.

That's why I called the engineers silly. It was probably a combo of random off the shelf parts and bean counters that determined what the engineers had access to. It's a really stupid design and poorly thought out.

What acura should have done is include either better cushioned bumpers with more adjustment or a soft close spring on the strut. My bumpers are out of adjustment with one all the way in and one all the way out, and the hatch still needs more to adjust so it's properly even side to side. Theres a solid half inch difference side to side.

So just wrapping up my efforts here. I purchased an after market strut and I think it's the perfect size. I ended up pairing one factory and one aftermarket because the aftermarket "bumped" at the top of it's range and the factory one is a hair shorter so it stops the travel before it reaches the end. Trunk opens by itself and can be closed with one hand!
